What is ED?

Simply put, ED is the inability to obtain an erection, or the inability to maintain an erection until ejaculation.  It is not an “all-or-nothing” proposition, as some men who suffer from ED are able to achieve a partial erection but cannot achieve a full erection.  Men who suffer from this condition may find it to be sporadic—meaning that it does not always occur—or they may find it to be something that happens on a regular basis.

Understanding the Physiological Causes of ED

With a normal erection, the brain sends a signal to the spinal cord, instructing it to increase blood flow into the pelvic region.  The penis then fills with blood, causing it to become erect.

When this doesn’t happen, the result is ED.  As such causes for ED tend to center around things that affect either the nerves—which carry the signal to increase blood flow—or the blood vessels that actually carry the blood.

Here are some common causes:

  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Blood vessel diseases or injuries
  • Diabetes (or other drugs that affect blood flow or neurological function)
  • Hormone level problems such as low testosterone
  • Injuries to the neurological system
  • Injury to the pelvic area stemming from trauma or surgery
  • Medications that alter blood flow or neurological function
  • Pelvic exposure to radiation
  • Psychological issues including depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues

When you come to us, we will narrow down the cause of your ED.  It may be something as simple as adjusting your medication, or it may be indicative of a more serious issue.  Either way, we’ll work hard to take care of you and restore your sexual function as quickly as possible.
